Punakha
The Ancient Capital of Bhutan
Location
Two hours drive from capital into the central parts of Bhutan, is a place of profound historical and cultural significance. Known as the ancient capital of Bhutan, Punakha was the seat of government until 1955 when the capital was moved to Thimphu. The town is located at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level, making it one of the warmer regions in Bhutan, especially during winter.
Historical Significance
Punakha is home to the Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness).
This majestic fortress was constructed in 1637-1638 by the first Zhabdrung Rinpoche, Ngawang Namgyal. The Dzong is not only an architectural marvel but also houses sacred relics of the Southern Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. It serves as the winter residence for the Central Monastic Body led by the Je Khenpo.
The Punakha Dzong is a central hub for various cultural and religious activities. It was the site of the coronation of Ugyen Wangchuck as the first King of Bhutan in 1907. The Dzong has also witnessed several significant events, including the signing of a treaty with Britain in 1910.

Punakha is surrounded by lush greenery and is crisscrossed by the Pho Chu (Male River) and Mo Chu (Female River). The confluence of these two rivers creates a picturesque landscape that is a sight to behold.
