His Majesty The King emphasizes education as crucial to Bhutan's rapid modernization and development. He established the Royal Academy in Paro to offer a holistic education model for the 21st century. The Academy promotes collaboration among teachers, learners, and researchers through innovative teaching methods beyond traditional classrooms. Guided by a Royal Decree issued on the 113th National Day, the Academy aims to reflect national aspirations in its education approach. In celebration of His Majesty’s 41st Birth Anniversary, the RIGSS Podcast honors the Royal Academy’s role in revolutionizing Bhutan’s education system.

Location

Located deep inside forested hills, about 4,000-meter above sea level of Paro Valley, Ugyen Guru Lhakhang is a remote monastery with a rich history. Accessible by a winding 17-kilometer road from Paro international airport, this temple has been a center of spiritual disputes between Ap Chungdu of Haa valley and Rigo Tsho, a deity from Shokuna lake Haa.

The agreement forged between Ap Chungdu and the lake spirit marks a significant spiritual boundary, with stone markers still standing today.

The current structure of Ugyen Guru Lhakhang, oriented northeast towards Paro Valley, is a traditional Bhutanese building with large windows, a two-tiered roof, and a distinctive gilded sertog finial. Inside, the preserved head of Sherab Mebar is housed, along with an oversized prayer wheel in a separate pavilion. The temple stands as a testament to Bhutan’s rich spiritual heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past and the enduring legacy of its founder.

History

Founded by Sherab Mebar, a 14th-century Tertön (Treasure Discoverer), the monastery’s purpose was to uncover hidden Buddhist treasures left by Guru Rinpoche. Despite his pure intentions, Sherab Mebar is remembered for both his successes and notable failures.

Dungkar Dzong

Located few kilometers away from The royal Academy in Pangbisa, it is a remarkable architectural marvel that embodies Bhutan's rich heritage and its progressive vision. Perched on a spur overlooking the serene Paro valley, this dzong seamlessly blends traditional Bhutanese design with modern elements. Constructed under the supervision of His Majesty The King, it took seven years to complete, utilizing locally sourced materials and innovative building techniques by 2023.

One infamous incident involved draining Rigo Tsho (Treasure Lake) to retrieve treasures, which led to a tragic drowning of some of his attendants when the lake refilled unexpectedly. Sherab Mebar, with the intervention of Ap Chungdu, managed to escape, retrieving a single cymbal, which remains in Paro Dzong and is displayed during the very first day of Paro Tshechu festival.
